ZD goes Solar in 2007! Believe it or not, Albert Einstein published a paper on the photoelectric effect in 1904 - in 1921 he received the Nobel Prize for this paper. By the end of this year, ZD Wines will be running exclusively on solar power; another step towards reducing our carbon footprint. It is estimated that we will be removing 233,224 lbs of CO2/yr from the environment through this conversion. Recycling materials: glass, plastic, aluminum and paper are all important aspects that we have instilled at the winery since the early days. In addition, florescent light bulbs have been replaced with energy efficient versions and gray water is directed into a filtering system that prepares it for irrigation. Last year, when remodeling the offices, we selected bamboo flooring (a more renewable material compared to hardwood), and we continue to look at how we can improve the winery in a green way!
In the vineyard, founder Norm deLeuze’s philosophy of maintaining a biologically active soil to produce healthy plants (grapes!), is ever prevalent. Over the last 38 years, ZD has developed effective ways of utilizing natural predators, encouraging growth through cover crops, fighting weeds by burning them with a flamer, and last but not least, utilizing compost and manure to enrich the soil. All tractors used in the vineyard are run on 100% biodiesel, not only does it lower our dependence on fossil fuel, but there is (on average) a 50% decrease in ozone forming potential compared to diesel fuel. (See data at biodiesel.org) ZD Wines‘ overall approach to farming organically is not only based on the quality of wine, but implemented for the good of the environment. Our organic certified vineyards are rich with a soil that is packed with organisms that will continue to protect and support the vines and canopy creating a healthy balance that ultimately results in high quality grapes. Stay tuned, for more ways that we will become even greener in the future…
